Planning poker is how a lot of agile teams estimate work: everyone picks a card in secret, then the cards are revealed together, so nobody anchors on the first number said out loud. We built our own version in spring 2022, from first commit to working rooms in about five weeks.

Features

  • Rooms: share a room link and teammates join the table under their own name.
  • Hidden votes: each player's card stays face down until someone reveals the whole table.
  • Task queue: add the stories you want to estimate to a queue beside the table, and remove them as you go.
  • Remembered profile: your display name is kept in local storage, so you don't have to type it every session.

How it's built

An Angular 13 front end talks to a small Node.js server over Socket.io. The server keeps each room's players and their current selections in memory and broadcasts every table action to the rest of the room. A player who joins late receives the room's current state straight away.

I co-wrote it with Scarlett, splitting the work between the socket events and the table UI. The code is open source under the MIT licence.
